Project 004 - Final

FINAL IMAGE

I've always had a love for architecture and complex forms generated from simple, basic shapes.
During the initial development of the brief I wanted to create something that represented an abstracted city map that is being viewed from a great distance.

How this final image "came to be" involved several stages of development:

Preliminary drawings & sketches
Throughout the trimester I had always said to myself that I would begin a project by putting pen to paper for 100% of the preliminary development. So, with this being the final project for the course I decided to utilise graph paper to draw 24 images that will act as pattern seeds (see post below) for the program to operate.

Coding:
First off, the patterns were coded into Processing, along with the grid divisions and a tool that draws the pattern on a different grid location for each program iteration. To add some variety each grid would have a pattern selected at random with a randomly selected orientation of 0, 90, 180 & 270 degrees.

Graphics Assembly:
The dimensions of the image created by the processing script measured 1200 x 700 pixels (a grid of 12 x 7 units).  I wanted to create final composite whose measurements were a lot larger to facilitate printing and display in a large, hi-res format.

To create a higher resolution version of the final image, a total of nine 1200 x 700 pixel images where stitched together in Photoshop to create a large format poster. This was aided by some pre-planning; that the standard grid divisions would exist within every image created with the program.
